The ABB ACS800 was the flagship industrial AC drive incorporating ABB's pioneering Direct Torque Control (DTC) technology, offering the fastest torque response of any drive on the market without encoder feedback. Installed in large numbers at Saudi Arabia's petrochemical plants, paper mills, cement factories, and steel mills during the late 1990s through early 2010s, the ACS800 proved highly reliable — many installations remain operational after 15–20 years of continuous service. The ACS880 inherits and improves upon ACS800 DTC technology with faster torque response (500 µs vs 1–2 ms), higher control accuracy, and modern fieldbus protocols including EtherNet/IP and PROFINET that ACS800 could not support. The migration service includes parameter analysis and translation from ACS800 parameter structure to ACS880 equivalents, mechanical cabinet modification for drives being reinstalled in existing switchroom cabinets, and DDCS fibre-optic system upgrades for multidrive applications.
