Ekip Hi-Touch LSIG — ABB Ekip Hi-Touch Electronic Trip Unit

The ABB Ekip Hi-Touch is the most advanced electronic trip unit in the Ekip family, designed for the SACE Emax 2 and Tmax XT circuit breaker ranges to transform standard protection devices into fully intelligent, communicating power management nodes. The trip unit provides the complete LSIG+G protection function set — long-time overcurrent (L), short-time overcurrent (S) with I²t limiting, instantaneous overcurrent (I), ground fault (G), and optional residual current device (RCD) function — all with independently adjustable current and time thresholds accessible via the integral graphical display or through the Ekip Link communication bus.

Beyond protection, the Ekip Hi-Touch integrates a Class 1 energy meter (IEC 62053-21) measuring true RMS voltage, current, active power (kW), reactive power (kVAR), apparent power (kVA), energy (kWh, kVARh), power factor, and harmonic distortion up to the 25th harmonic. This transforms the circuit breaker into a complete metering point, eliminating the need for a separate multifunction meter at each switchboard incomer and feeder — saving panel space, reducing wiring cost, and providing a single device with all protection and measurement data accessible over a single communication connection.

Zone Selective Interlocking (ZSI) between Ekip-equipped breakers allows the protection system to distinguish between local and through-fault conditions. When a downstream fault is detected, the upstream Ekip breaker receives a ZSI signal and maintains its full short-time delay, allowing the downstream breaker to clear the fault selectively. If the ZSI signal is absent — indicating the fault is at the upstream breaker level — the upstream Ekip trips instantaneously, minimising fault energy. This intelligent coordination eliminates the traditional trade-off between fast fault clearance and selectivity in LV distribution, and is required by Saudi Electricity Company (SEC) engineering standards for main switchboard protection in facilities above 1 MW.

Razz Middle East supplies Ekip Hi-Touch trip units as factory-fitted equipment on new Emax 2 and Tmax XT orders and as upgrades to existing Emax 2 circuit breakers on site. Our protection engineers configure LSIG settings in accordance with the facility's protection coordination study and provide Ekip Link integration with SCADA systems including SEC's approved monitoring platforms for large industrial and commercial customers in Saudi Arabia.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Complete LSIG+G protection function set with independently adjustable thresholds for each protection element, allowing precise protection coordination with upstream MV protection relays and downstream feeder MCCBs to achieve IEC 60909 selective discrimination at every distribution level.
  • Integrated Class 1 energy meter (IEC 62053-21) measuring 32 electrical parameters including V, A, kW, kVAR, kVA, kWh, kVARh, power factor, and total harmonic distortion to the 25th harmonic — eliminating the need for a separate multifunction meter at the main incomer and major feeder positions.
  • Zone Selective Interlocking (ZSI) reduces upstream fault clearance time to near-instantaneous when a downstream fault signal is absent, while maintaining full selectivity when a downstream breaker can clear the fault — meeting SEC engineering standard requirements for intelligent LV protection coordination.
  • Ekip Link communications module supports Modbus RTU, PROFIBUS DP, CANopen, and IEC 61850 GOOSE messaging for integration with building management systems, industrial SCADA platforms, and SEC-approved remote monitoring systems at large commercial and industrial facilities.
  • Graphical LCD display with direct-access keys shows real-time electrical measurements, protection settings, trip cause analysis, and event log without requiring a laptop or secondary tool — enabling maintenance engineers to verify protection settings and review trip history during planned maintenance.
  • Optional RCD module adds residual current (earth leakage) protection to the Emax 2 breaker with adjustable threshold from 0.3 A to 30 A, providing combined overcurrent and earth leakage protection in a single device for earthed generator systems and offshore installations.
  • Ekip Upgrade feature allows a standard Ekip Touch trip unit to be field-upgraded to Ekip Hi-Touch without removing the breaker from service, protecting the investment in existing Emax 2 installations when enhanced metering or communication capability is added during facility upgrades.

Industrial Applications in Saudi Arabia

  • Main LV switchboard incomer protection and metering at SEC-connected industrial facilities in MODON and SPARK industrial estates, where Ekip Hi-Touch provides both protection coordination complying with SEC engineering standards and Class 1 metering for internal energy management reporting.
  • Bus-tie protection at large data centre and hospital LV main switchboards, where ZSI coordination between multiple Emax 2 bus-tie and incomer breakers enables automatic bus transfer with fault discrimination in under 100 ms — meeting Uptime Institute Tier III/IV availability requirements.
  • Feeder protection in intelligent building management systems at NEOM and Red Sea Project mixed-use developments, where Ekip Link integration with Modbus/IEC 61850 SCADA provides centralised energy monitoring and protection status visibility across the entire LV distribution network.
  • Main incomer protection at ARAMCO gas processing facilities, where Ekip Hi-Touch LSIG settings are coordinated with the facility's 13.8 kV protection relay study and SAES-P-100 requires IEC 60947-2 Type Test certified electronic trip units with documented protection settings.
  • Cogeneration plant LV incomer and bus-tie coordination at SABIC combined heat and power plants, where the Ekip Hi-Touch bus-tie breaker must discriminate between import/export mode switching transients and genuine fault conditions using ZSI to prevent nuisance trips of the CHP generator.
  • Energy management at commercial tower main switchboards in Riyadh and Jeddah, where Ekip Hi-Touch Class 1 metering provides the per-floor energy billing data required by Saudi Green Building Code TARSHID Energy Conservation standards for LEED-certified commercial developments.
  • Offshore platform main switchboard protection at Saudi Aramco offshore fields, where Ekip Hi-Touch provides IEC 60947-2 certified LV protection with IEC 61850 integration to the platform's Integrated Control and Safety System (ICSS) for centralised protection monitoring.
