SD-KIT-AF16 — ABB Star-Delta Motor Starter Assembly

ABB star-delta (Y/Δ) motor starter assemblies provide reduced-voltage starting for three-phase induction motors above approximately 15 kW by connecting motor windings in star (Y) configuration at startup — reducing line current to one-third of direct-on-line starting current — and automatically transitioning to delta (Δ) at near-synchronous speed for full-power operation. The ABB assembly uses three coordinated AF series contactors (line, star, and delta) selected as a matched set with mechanical and electrical interlocks preventing star and delta contactors from closing simultaneously — a fault condition that would cause a three-phase short circuit. An integral CT-APS timer relay provides the transition timing function, with the changeover delay adjustable from 3 to 30 seconds to accommodate different motor inertia and load levels.

The engineering trade-off of star-delta starting is well understood: the one-third current reduction in star means the motor develops only one-third of its full-load torque during the star period, which is adequate for low-inertia loads like centrifugal pumps and fans but insufficient for high-friction or high-inertia loads. For centrifugal pump and fan applications — which represent the vast majority of Saudi Arabia's star-delta installations — this is perfectly acceptable since the motor accelerates under star against a lightly loaded pump, and the transition to delta occurs when the shaft is already near synchronous speed. The transition current surge at star-to-delta changeover, which briefly exceeds DOL starting current if the transition is made when the motor is not yet at full speed, is managed by the adjustable timer — set long enough for the motor to reach near-synchronous speed in star before transition, minimising the severity of the transition transient on the supply network.

Star-delta starters are the dominant reduced-voltage starting method for motors in the 15 kW to 160 kW range across Saudi Arabia's industrial and utility sectors, representing the economic starting solution where the torque limitation is acceptable. ARAMCO specifies Y/D starters for centrifugal pumps and fans from 15 kW upward where DOL starting current would cause unacceptable voltage dip on local distribution panels. NWC and MARAFIQ water authority specifications require Y/D starters on booster pump motors above 18.5 kW. Cement plants operated by Saudi Cement, Qassim Cement, and YACCO use Y/D starters on belt conveyors and product transport fans throughout their production facilities. SABIC uses Y/D starters for utility cooling water pumps and wastewater treatment blowers where VFDs are not economically justified.

Razz Middle East supplies ABB star-delta starter kits from AF16 (5.5–15 kW) to AF145 (55–160 kW) with matched AF contactors in line, star, and delta roles, pre-selected CT-APS transition timer, mechanical interlock frames, and complete Type 2 coordination documentation. We also design and supply complete star-delta starter panels in NEMA or IEC enclosures for direct installation.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Starting current reduction to one-third of DOL starting current during the star period limits supply voltage dip on local distribution panels, meeting ARAMCO, NWC, and SEC requirements for voltage flicker limits on shared distribution feeders.
  • Matched three-contactor assembly with factory-set mechanical and electrical interlocks prevents star and delta contactors from closing simultaneously — eliminating the three-phase short circuit risk that exists with individually selected contactor sets.
  • Adjustable CT-APS transition timer (3–30 s) allows the changeover delay to be set to match the motor's acceleration time to near-synchronous speed in star, minimising the transition transient current surge at star-to-delta changeover.
  • T-series overload relay on the delta contactor monitors full running current in delta configuration, providing thermal overload and phase-failure protection during normal steady-state operation after star-to-delta transition.
  • Type 2 IEC 60947-4-1 coordination testing of the three-contactor assembly confirms fault condition performance, satisfying ARAMCO SAES-P-104 and SABIC project engineer requirements for motor starter panel documentation.
  • Compatible with AF series contactor universal coil voltage (24–500 V AC/DC), making the star-delta kit suitable for both 220 V AC and 110 V AC control circuit designs without contactor replacement across Saudi Arabia's diverse panel voltage standards.
  • Compact DIN rail assembly footprint allows star-delta starter elements to be assembled into standard 600 mm MCC modules alongside overload relay, MCB, and control components without exceeding MCC module depth limits.

Industrial Applications in Saudi Arabia

  • Centrifugal pump motor starters at ARAMCO water injection and crude transfer stations, where Y/D starting reduces the current inrush that would otherwise cause protection relay trips on the 11 kV/400 V transformer secondary feeder.
  • HVAC air handling unit supply fan starters in commercial buildings across Riyadh and Jeddah, where Y/D starting limits flicker on the building's LV main switchboard during the frequent fan restart cycles required by HVAC control sequences.
  • Water booster pump starters at NWC and MARAFIQ pump stations for motors above 18.5 kW, where the Y/D starting method is specified in the National Water Company's motor control panel engineering standard.
  • Cooling tower fan starters at industrial and commercial facilities in Dammam and Al Khobar, where Y/D starting on fans above 22 kW limits the starting current impact on lightly loaded distribution systems during off-peak periods.
  • Cement plant conveyor and fan motor starters at Saudi Cement and Qassim Cement plants, where Y/D starters provide economical reduced-voltage starting for conveyor drive motors up to 160 kW without the cost of variable speed drives.
  • SABIC utility cooling water pump and wastewater aeration blower starters at Jubail Industrial City, where Y/D starting satisfies SABIC's motor starting current limit requirements without requiring variable frequency drives on non-critical duty services.
  • Agricultural irrigation pump starters for large farm and greenhouse operations across Al Qassim and Al Hasa regions, where Y/D starting on 45–90 kW pump motors limits the impact on rural distribution feeder voltage during simultaneous pump starts.
