WEG DWE-3-S3-NT Electronic Motor Protection Relay with Ground Fault

The WEG DWE-3-S3-NT is the ground-fault-enabled variant of the DWE-3 electronic motor protection relay, adding a sensitive earth fault (residual current) detection function to the full suite of multi-function motor protection provided by the standard DWE-3. In Saudi industrial facilities, ground fault protection on large motors is a specific requirement of Saudi Aramco SAES-P-100 and SAES-B-058 (fire and safety requirements) for motors installed in classified hazardous areas (Zones 0, 1, 2 per IEC 60079-10-1) and in safety-critical services where a ground fault on the motor stator could create a fire or safety hazard.

Ground Fault Protection Function

The earth fault function uses a zero-sequence (residual current) measurement approach via a dedicated core-balance CT or summation of three phase CTs. The trip threshold is adjustable from 0.2 A to 2.0 A, allowing discrimination between genuine ground faults and normal capacitive leakage current on long cable runs to remote motor loads — an important consideration in Saudi industrial plants where motors may be located 500–1000 m from the MCC in large plant layouts. Time delay is adjustable to coordinate with downstream protection devices.

Hazardous Area and Saudi Aramco Requirements

Saudi Aramco SAES-E-005 defines electrical area classification for onshore facilities, and SAES-P-100 specifies protection requirements for motors in classified areas. The DWE-3-S3-NT's sensitive ground fault function meets the requirements for motors in Zone 2 areas and beyond, where early detection of ground faults prevents insulation degradation from progressing to a phase-to-ground fault that could ignite flammable atmospheres. SABIC's HSSE requirements for petrochemical plant motor protection similarly mandate ground fault detection on motors in classified areas.

Integration and Communication

The DWE-3-S3-NT includes all functions of the standard DWE-3 (overload, phase unbalance, phase loss, thermistor, locked rotor, restart inhibit) plus ground fault, all accessible via Modbus RTU for DCS integration. Saudi Aramco DCS systems (Honeywell, Emerson DeltaV, ABB 800xA) integrate with the DWE-3-S3-NT via Modbus to provide continuous motor health monitoring and alarm annunciation.
