The WEG DWE-3-S3-NT is the ground-fault-enabled variant of the DWE-3 electronic motor protection relay, adding a sensitive earth fault (residual current) detection function to the full suite of multi-function motor protection provided by the standard DWE-3. In Saudi industrial facilities, ground fault protection on large motors is a specific requirement of Saudi Aramco SAES-P-100 and SAES-B-058 (fire and safety requirements) for motors installed in classified hazardous areas (Zones 0, 1, 2 per IEC 60079-10-1) and in safety-critical services where a ground fault on the motor stator could create a fire or safety hazard.
Ground Fault Protection Function
The earth fault function uses a zero-sequence (residual current) measurement approach via a dedicated core-balance CT or summation of three phase CTs. The trip threshold is adjustable from 0.2 A to 2.0 A, allowing discrimination between genuine ground faults and normal capacitive leakage current on long cable runs to remote motor loads — an important consideration in Saudi industrial plants where motors may be located 500–1000 m from the MCC in large plant layouts.
