A gateway is bought to solve one problem: a machine, drive, weighing indicator, analyser or packaged skid arrives with the wrong network on it, and the plant control system cannot read it. The Communicator sits between the two, presents itself as a station on the control network, and maps the data it collects from the device into that network's process image. On the device side that link is usually a serial line running Modbus RTU or a raw protocol; on the control side it is an industrial Ethernet protocol such as PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, EtherCAT or Modbus TCP. Configuration is done through a browser or a vendor tool rather than by writing code, and the mapping is stored in the unit.
