Magnetic-field sensors replaced the old reed switch on pneumatic cylinders because they have no moving contact to weld or bounce. The sensing element is solid state, the response is fast enough for high-cycle machines, and the switching point is repeatable over millions of strokes. Selection turns on three things rather than on any electrical rating. The first is mounting style, which is set by the cylinder: a T-slot sensor drops into the groove of a profile cylinder, a C-slot or dovetail version suits a different profile, and a band or tie-rod mount clamps around a round-barrel or tie-rod cylinder. The second is electrical output: PNP or NPN, normally open or normally closed, two-wire or three-wire, and whether the device speaks IO-Link so that its status and switching point can be read over the network. The third is the connection: a fixed cable of a stated length or an M8 or M12 connector taking a separate cordset.
