BURNDY YAV38 Vinyl-Insulated Compression Lug 240mm²

The BURNDY YAV38 is the vinyl-insulated variant of the YA38 aluminum compression lug, providing a UL 486B-listed termination solution for 240mm² aluminum conductors where the lug barrel area requires additional electrical insulation after crimping. The vinyl sleeve — moulded from a UV-resistant, self-extinguishing PVC compound rated to 600V and 90°C — covers the full barrel length and the cable entry throat, preventing accidental contact with live parts in congested switchboard and cable tray environments and eliminating the need for separate heat-shrink sleeves or tape wrapping over the barrel area after installation. The colour-coded sleeve system allows quick phase identification in three-phase termination work.

In Aramco underground cable systems, vinyl-insulated lugs are specified for 0.6/1kV distribution cables where open-barrel lugs would require post-crimp insulation applied in the field — an operation that is difficult to quality-control in confined trench or manhole environments. BURNDY's factory-applied vinyl sleeve provides a reproducible insulation standard that meets Aramco inspection requirements without dependence on field workmanship. At Aramco's GOSPs, water injection stations, and Central Processing Facilities (CPFs) across the Eastern Province, low-voltage power distribution panels handling 240mm² feeder cables regularly use YAV38 lugs on the incomer bus connections where inadvertent contact risk is highest.

The YAV38 uses the same barrel geometry and BURNDY die set (38mm² series) as the uninsulated YA38, meaning no separate tooling investment is needed on sites where both insulated and uninsulated versions are used. The vinyl sleeve is factory-bonded to the barrel and does not slip or rotate during and after crimping, unlike aftermarket heat-shrink sleeves applied over standard lugs. The palm of the YAV38 remains uninsulated to allow bolted connection to switchgear and panel terminals without having to remove insulation, and the palm is tin-plated to IEC 61238-1 contact surface requirements.
