The WEG SPD Type 1+2 Surge Protection Device is a combined Class I and Class II transient overvoltage protection device rated for 275 V or 440 V single and three-phase LV distribution systems, with 50 kA maximum impulse current (Iimp) and 40 kA nominal discharge current (In), designed to protect electrical installations and sensitive equipment in Saudi Arabia's industrial and commercial facilities against lightning-induced surges, switching transients, and power system disturbances. The SPD-T1T2 Type 1 component handles direct lightning strike energy conducted via the installation's lightning protection system, while the Type 2 component manages the lower-energy switching and induced transients that damage variable frequency drives, PLCs, instrumentation, and power supplies — the most expensive and failure-prone electrical equipment in modern industrial facilities.

The SPD-T1T2 uses a hybrid metal oxide varistor (MOV) and spark gap technology, combining the fast response of MOV elements (response time less than 25 ns) with the high current capability of spark gap devices to handle direct lightning energy. The device complies fully with IEC 61643-11 Type 1+2 classification and IEC 62305-4 lightning protection system coordination requirements, with the plug-in cartridge design allowing quick replacement of the protective element without removing the base module from the DIN rail — essential for minimising downtime in the event of a surge event that degrades the protective element. The integrated status window and remote signalling output (potential-free contact) allow the device's condition to be monitored from a SCADA or BMS system, ensuring replacement before protection is lost.
