WEG W22X ATEX/IECEx Hazardous Area Motor

The WEG W22X ATEX/IECEx Hazardous Area Motor is WEG's purpose-engineered explosion-protected induction motor range, designed for use in flammable gas, vapour, mist, and dust atmospheres classified under IEC 60079 as Zone 1 (Ex d, Ex e, Ex de) and Zone 2 (Ex nA) environments, and under IEC 61241 as Zone 21 and Zone 22 dusty environments. Available in power ratings from 0.37 kW to 355 kW, the W22X covers the full scope of hazardous area motor applications encountered in Saudi Arabia's oil and gas upstream and downstream facilities, petrochemical plants, paint and chemical storage facilities, and offshore platforms — making it the single motor platform for all hazardous location requirements across the Kingdom's most demanding industrial sites.

The W22X is certified to both ATEX (EU) and IECEx (international) standards — the two globally recognised explosion protection certification schemes — with certificates issued by PTB, DEKRA, or equivalent Notified Bodies. For Ex d (flameproof) protection, the W22X features precision-machined flame path joints on terminal box, end shields, and conduit entries, ensuring any internal ignition cannot propagate to the surrounding atmosphere. Ex e (increased safety) versions are available for Zone 1 installations where elevated protection of the winding termination is required. Gas group coverage spans IIA (propane), IIB (ethylene), and IIB+H2 (hydrogen) — the last being critical for Saudi refinery and ammonia plant applications where hydrogen is present. Temperature classes T3, T4, and T5 cover the surface temperature requirements of all common hydrocarbon gases and vapours.

Saudi Arabia is one of the world's most intensive users of hazardous area electrical equipment, given the density of ARAMCO oil and gas processing infrastructure, SABIC and SADAF petrochemical complexes, and the NGL fractionation facilities concentrated in Jubail Industrial City and the Eastern Province. ARAMCO's Materials System Specifications (SAMSS) and Engineering Standards (SAES) mandate ATEX or IECEx certified motors for Zone 1 and Zone 2 classified areas, and SABIC's equivalent specifications align with IEC 60079 requirements. The W22X carries all necessary ATEX/IECEx documentation — including Ex certificates, EC declaration of conformity, and detailed installation drawings — to satisfy ARAMCO and SABIC vendor approval processes without additional local testing.
