About Cabinet Power Contactors

A power contactor is an electromagnetically operated switch. A coil pulls an armature, the armature closes a set of main poles, and the poles carry the load current until the coil is de-energised and springs open them again. Everything else about the device follows from that. The main pole rating is given in two ways: a thermal current for continuous carrying, and a utilisation category that describes what the contacts survive when they make and break. AC-1 is a resistive load, AC-3 is a squirrel-cage motor started and switched off while running, AC-4 is inching and plugging, and the same physical contactor is rated much lower under AC-4 than AC-1.
