Weidmüller WEW 2.5/U ATEX Ex e Terminal Block

The Weidmüller WEW 2.5/U is an Ex e (increased safety) terminal block certified to IEC 60079-7 and ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU for use in Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas, rated for 2.5 mm² conductors at 24 A / 500 V AC within certified Ex e enclosures. The terminal block meets the IEC 60079-7 Ex e requirements for increased safety — specifically the mandated minimum clearance and creepage distances between live parts (8 mm clearance, 12 mm creepage at 500 V, Pollution Degree 2), the torque-proof positive-locking screw, and the IP54 minimum protection of the enclosure system — making it the appropriate choice for flammable-gas field junction boxes on ARAMCO wellhead sites, GOSP (Gas-Oil Separation Plant) instrument junction boxes, and gas-compression facility field panels where IEC Zone 1 classification applies. The ATEX and IECEx dual certification opens the product to Saudi ARAMCO engineering specifications that reference IECEx as the internationally recognised hazardous area standard.

The WEW screw-clamp design includes a vibration-resistant screw with a defined final-tightening torque of 0.5 N·m marked on the terminal body, ensuring that the installation contractor achieves the correct clamp force without over-tightening, which is a critical requirement for IEC 60079-7 Ex e installations where every connection must be made to the torque stated in the installation certificate. The stainless-steel screw and nickel-plated copper contact are selected for resistance to H₂S and salt-laden humid air, conditions prevalent in ARAMCO's Eastern Province wellhead and offshore environments. The integrated spring washer prevents loosening under the thermal cycling experienced in field junction boxes mounted in the open Saudi desert environment, where diurnal temperatures routinely span 25–50°C.

The WEW 2.5/U is used extensively on ARAMCO EPC projects in hazardous-area instrument panels — particularly in field junction boxes and marshalling enclosures mounted within the Zone 1 or Zone 2 classified area boundary around GOSPs, NGL fractionation units, and gas compression stations in the Ghawar, Khurais, and Safaniyah fields. Saudi Aramco SAES-J-901 (Instrumentation Panels and Consoles) requires that terminal blocks used in Ex e certified enclosures carry a valid IECEx or ATEX certificate and meet the creepage and clearance requirements of IEC 60079-7 — the WEW 2.5/U satisfies all these requirements and has been used on multiple Aramco FEED and detailed engineering packages executed by Technip, Wood, and Jacobs for the Marjan and Zuluf field expansions. SABIC's Jubail industrial complex ATEX panel packages also specify the WEW series as an acceptable alternative to Phoenix Contact TERMITRAB in ATEX field junction box applications.
