Sandvik DR460i Rotary Drill Rig

The Sandvik DR460i is an intelligent, fully autonomous-capable rotary blasthole drill rig designed for large open-pit mining operations requiring high production drilling capacity in the 152–270 mm (6–10.5 inch) hole diameter range. Powered by a Cummins QSK50 diesel engine delivering 1,491 kW (2,000 hp) and equipped with Sandvik's iDrill automation and fleet management platform, the DR460i delivers a bit weight of up to 539 kN (121,000 lb) and a maximum drill depth of 91.4 m per pass — performance figures that align with the large-scale phosphate and metalliferous mining operations being developed in Saudi Arabia's Northern Borders Region and Arabian Shield. The rig's AutoMine Ready capability enables progressive integration of autonomous drilling functions, from drill parameter optimisation to full hole-to-hole automated operation, reducing the operator skill requirements that present a challenge in remote Saudi mining locations.

The DR460i is built on a full-length crawler undercarriage with a high-ground-clearance levelling system that maintains the drill string perpendicular to the bench face across grades up to 15°, ensuring borehole accuracy and preventing drill string binding that reduces penetration rate. The mast assembly folds for transport and erects hydraulically without crane assistance, enabling rapid bench-to-bench repositioning across the large phosphate mine benches at Maaden's operations. The centralised service bay design groups all maintenance access points on one side of the machine, reducing service time and the physical demands on maintenance technicians working in Saudi Arabia's harsh desert environment — an important productivity factor at remote mine sites where experienced drilling rig mechanics are scarce and rotation schedules limit time available for maintenance.
