BM-3.2x5.5 — FLSmidth Ball Mill 3.2×5.5m

The FLSmidth Ball Mill 3.2×5.5m is a robust, high-capacity grinding mill used in primary and secondary grinding circuits across mineral processing, cement, and chemical processing industries. With a shell diameter of 3.2 metres and an effective grinding length of 5.5 metres, the BM-3.2×5.5 falls in the medium-large industrial scale that is well-suited to concentrating plant throughput requirements in the 200–500 t/h ore processing range, delivering ground product at 80% passing 75–150 microns depending on ore hardness and feed size. The mill operates in closed circuit with KREBS hydrocyclones in most mineral processing configurations, with the cyclone overflow reporting to downstream flotation or leaching circuits and the underflow returning to the mill for further grinding.

The FLSmidth ball mill design features a welded steel shell with replaceable liner plates in Cr-Mo alloy steel or rubber composites, trunnion-mounted on large-bore hydrodynamic journal bearings that are proven for decades of continuous service. The main drive girth gear and pinion set is precision machined and hardened, with oil mist lubrication that maintains a full film under all load conditions. The FLSmidth design's flexibility in liner configuration — from lifter-bar profiles optimised for coarse grinding to classifying liners for fine grinding — allows the same mill shell to be reconfigured for different ore grinding stages without mechanical modification, extending the useful equipment life.

Maaden Phosphate Company at Wa'ad Al-Shamal, the world's single largest phosphate mining and processing complex, operates multiple FLSmidth ball mills as the core of its phosphate ore beneficiation plant's grinding circuits. The reliable, low-maintenance performance of FLSmidth ball mills at Wa'ad Al-Shamal's extreme desert conditions — with summer ambient temperatures exceeding 50°C, significant dust, and limited access for heavy maintenance equipment — has established FLSmidth as the preferred mill supplier for Saudi mineral processing projects. Saudi Cement Group's cement grinding facilities also use FLSmidth ball mills in closed-circuit cement grinding configurations, where the mills grind clinker, gypsum, and limestone to the fineness required for concrete applications.

Razz Middle East provides FLSmidth ball mill supply, installation, and aftermarket support in Saudi Arabia. Our local engineering team supports ball mill specification for greenfield projects, liner change-out planning and execution, main bearing inspection and refurbishment, and the supply of OEM spare parts from our in-kingdom stock. We serve mining and cement customers in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Jubail, Yanbu, Wa'ad Al-Shamal, and all Saudi industrial sites.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Trunnion-mounted hydrodynamic journal bearing design provides full oil-film lubrication under all load conditions, achieving decades of continuous operation between major overhauls in Saudi Arabia's desert operating environment.
  • Interchangeable liner configuration system — from high-lift bar profiles for coarse grinding to classifying liners for fine grinding — allows the same mill shell to serve different grinding duties without mechanical redesign.
  • Welded and stress-relieved shell construction with engineered stiffening ring design minimises shell deflection and liner bolt fretting, extending liner life and reducing maintenance frequency in high-tonnage applications.
  • Precision-machined and surface-hardened girth gear and pinion set with oil-mist lubrication maintains full load-bearing film at all operating temperatures, including Saudi summer ambient conditions above 50°C.
  • Compatible with FLSmidth's KREBS gMAX hydrocyclone range for standard closed-circuit grinding configurations, allowing integrated circuit design and single-source supply from Razz Middle East.

Industrial Applications in Saudi Arabia

  • Secondary and tertiary phosphate ore grinding at Ma'aden Phosphate Company's Wa'ad Al-Shamal beneficiation plant, working in closed circuit with KREBS gMAX hydrocyclones to achieve the liberation size required for flotation recovery.
  • Cement clinker and raw material grinding at Saudi Cement Group, YACCO, Yamama Cement, and other Saudi cement producers, producing ground cement product to 3200–4500 cm²/g Blaine for concrete applications.
  • Bauxite ore milling in the Ma'aden Aluminium Ras Al-Khair refinery feed preparation circuit, achieving the particle size required for efficient alumina extraction in the Bayer process digestion stage.
  • Limestone and industrial mineral grinding at chemical processing plants in Jubail, Yanbu, and Ras Al-Khair industrial cities, producing calcium carbonate and other industrial mineral products to specification.
  • Gold and base metal ore grinding at new Vision 2030-linked mining projects on the Arabian Shield, operating in SAG-ball or rod-ball circuit configurations for efficient precious and base metal liberation.
