CBC-3500 — FLSmidth Cross-Bar Cooler 3500 t/h

The FLSmidth Cross-Bar Cooler CBC-3500 is a high-capacity clinker and mineral bulk material cooling system designed to rapidly quench hot material discharged from rotary kilns, calcining furnaces, or sintering lines from temperatures above 1400°C to below 100°C for downstream conveying, grinding, and storage. The CBC-3500 designation indicates a rated throughput of 3500 tonnes per hour, placing it in the large kiln-line class appropriate for cement plants producing 5000–8000 t/d of clinker. The Cross-Bar Cooler's defining operational advantage is its cross-bar grate mechanism: instead of conventional fixed or reciprocating grates where clinker slides across the grate surface causing wear and "red river" hot clinker bypass, the CBC uses alternating static and dynamic cross-bars that transport clinker on a bed supported by the cross-bars themselves, virtually eliminating grate plate wear and clinker bypass.

The Cross-Bar Cooler's grate design uses no grate plates in the traditional sense — the clinker bed rests directly on the cross-bars, which are solid alloy steel profiles designed to resist the thermal and abrasive loads of hot clinker. The dynamic cross-bars advance clinker in precisely controlled strokes, driven by hydraulic actuators with programmable stroke length and frequency that can be adjusted from the control room. This precise clinker transport control, combined with the CBC's zoned air distribution system where each cooling air zone beneath the grate is independently controlled, allows optimisation of cooling profile for maximum secondary and tertiary air heat recovery to the kiln and calciner — directly improving kiln fuel efficiency and reducing CO₂ emissions per tonne of clinker.
